Authorities in Russia’s Far East on Monday known as off a rescue effort for 13 employees trapped deep underground in a collapsed gold mine and declared them useless.
The miners bought trapped on March 18 at a depth of about 400 ft when a part of the mine collapsed within the Zeysk district of the Amur area, about 3,000 miles east of Moscow.
About 200 rescuers used highly effective pumps to attempt to take out water that flooded the mine, posing a problem to the salvage operation.
Regional authorities and the mine operator introduced the termination of rescue efforts on Monday, saying that the mine remained flooded and extra of its sections may collapse, jeopardizing emergency responders.
The corporate that operates the mine, one in every of Russia’s largest, mentioned it will pay compensation to victims’ households.
Officers did not instantly say what triggered the accident. Most mining accidents prior to now have been blamed on violations of security guidelines.
The accident comes simply weeks after not less than 16 individuals died when the mud wall of an unlawful gold mine collapsed within the jungles of southern Venezuela.
In January, an unregulated gold mine collapsed in Mali, killing greater than 70 individuals.
